This story takes place in a parallel universe. There are three versions of Barbie. Barbie/Malibu is our traditional blonde Barbie. Barbie/Brooklyn is the black Barbie. Barbie/Teresa is Barbie’s best friend and the brunette Barbie.
“So, Miss Malibu? How did you decide to break up with Ken and leave him for yourself but with brown hair?” Barbie/Brooklyn asked her pale blonde counterpart.
“You mean I didn’t tell you already?” she said to her beautiful black counterpart.
“No, in fact I had to hear it through the grapevine! I thought you promised to keep me in the loop!”
“I’m sorry, Barbie! I-I’ve been telling so many people about this that I lost track!”
“Oh. really, Barbie? I’m so sorry …too! I-I just thought you went off your rocker or something because I always thought you and Ken would be there forever so when I heard about it from Lea, I was like: ‘WHAT!?'”
“I know! I know! I didn’t even see it coming myself! Come sit down. The very thought of she and I, Barbie and Teresa for a while.. like the very meaning of our names just always seemed strange and uncertain.. it’s just.. one day.. going into the night when he and I were supposed to go out somewhere for date night, I couldn’t even bring myself to get into the outfit I thought of wearing and it was this gorgeous new dress I had bought for that night SPECIFICALLY but.. it just didn’t seem right to wear it for someone that I just didn’t even want to kiss anymore.”
“So far this sounds like it wasn’t something that you randomly decided on a whim, but something that had been building up for quite sometime since I KNOW you both have been friends for god knows how long.”
“She was the first friend I made since I moved from Wisconsin.”
“Oh really!? Wow! And I thought that was Ken!”
“Well, Ken was my first friend EVER when I LIVED in Wisconsin and we grew up together and I thought I was never going to see him again.. until we later did and the rest being history! But when I was at my lowest when my father passed away and had to say goodbye to everything that lever knew and cared about and with Wisconsin not even being that great a place as l even remember, Teresa was there to show me that it wasn’t going to be so bad being in a place so unfamiliar and then she became my best friend.”
“When did you see Ken again?”
“High School, and it was the biggest explosion of emotion I had ever faced since I NEVER thought I would see him again. At first he was this jock that looked like the male version of me and decided to talk to him and the moment we told each other what our names were, it didn’t take long to figure out who the other one was and the next thing we knew we were the school’s hottest couple and were even Prom King and Queen!”
“EVEN after what happened with your prom dress and everything!?”
Malibu/Barbie nodded, “…yeah.”
Brooklyn/Barbie said, “B-but.. you didn’t even have on a dress or anything, right!? Sounds like not only did KEN have your back but the whole school! Did Ken tell everyone what happened and then out of the kindness in their hearts, they all voted you king and queen of prom!?”
“Actually.. no.”
“..then what happened?” she then asked with a look on her face.
“Well.. as you may remember, it was when my friends and I were posing at the pool which led to me falling in it ruining my dress, my make-up and everything when at least when my hair was able to dry into some nice soft beach waves.”
“That’s your natural texture?”
“Kinda, it doesn’t take much for it become straight, especially when I grew it out, with the length weighing out the curls and-“
“I know how curly hair works, Barbie.”
“Oof! Sorry Barbie ^_^;”
“It’s fine, Barbie, I knew you didn’t mean anything by it just be more careful. Like when you showed me that ‘cute’ Oreo t-shirt and-“
“Agh! Don’t remind me _”
“Just making sure you still feel bad about that. I didn’t make up that alias ‘Christie’ for nothing online.”
(artistic liberty to make both Christie and Barbie “Brooklyn” Roberts the same person, especially since Christie pretty much has been the black barbie for years, so..)
“Yeah, that was like the ONE place you could be treated more like your own person as opposed to just some alternate version of me when I DON’T MIND HAVING ANOTHER BARBIE AROUND! And it’s an easy name to remember!”
“Plus, I would think it would show that Barbie can be black too, like it’s not just a white girl name.”
“It really isn’t. Even if I would be a little concerned for any white parents naming their kids Daquan or Laqueesha.. or at least Laqueesha.. but doesn’t that have actual African roots to it and would be like if Ken’s parents named him Kwekwe?”
“Laqueesha is more a product of modern American culture based loosely off actual names from African cultures even if the names like Daquan, Kwekwe as well as others such as Jamal, Ashinisha, Malcolm and Shameka just to name a few.”
“Oh wow! Interesting!”
“Yes, it is.. but we both know you might be stalling so won’t have to tell me more about what happened. As flattered as I am and have been whenever you did ask questions about me and my cultural background. You’ve been a good friend since I met you and it’s why I want to know so bad.”
“Ok.. but yeah.. where was I?”
“We were talking about what happened at Prom and mentioned how your hair was after it dried.”
“Oh.. yeah!” Brooklyn gave Malibu the same look as before and she continued. “So.. what happened was.. once Ken and I got to Prom, it was a little awkward at first.. I was really happy that he saw me as beautiful just the way I was without my hair done, my dress or any make-up on but just seeing everyone else including Ken all dressed up and everything.. it just made me feel out of place.. like I was a last minute guest as opposed to an ACTUAL senior. I DID try dancing and having fun and no one really seemed to judge me.. or at least not to my face since, I saw the way some were looking at me.”
“I’m familiar with that.”
“Yeah.. so after a good while.. like maybe less than an hour, I went into the bathroom to cry. It was supposed to be my big night…I mean I know the party wasn’t all about me and I know in most settings I’m in, I’m at the center of it and if anything I thought maybe it would be a great change of pace to not be the center of it this time, to just be like everyone else for once and as l’ve said and thought, it WAS easier to dance in my jeans than in my dress but I don’t know.. I just really felt inferior to everyone that night.”
“Did you leave?”
“No. I found a way to get through the night and not miss out on prom because I would’ve felt worse if I did.”
“Then what am I missing here?”
“..Teresa was in the bathroom when I cried. She obviously wasn’t there when I first went in, HECK, NO ONE WAS IN THERE so it seemed safe to just let it out for a bit and then I felt so much relief and didn’t hear a thing for a good while and then IT JUST FELT SO DAMN GOOD TO JUST GET IT ALL OUT AND THEN-“
“‘Hey! Who’s crying in here?’, Teresa said with concern. I froze and-“
“Wait, did I just hear an accent in your voice just then when you quoted her?”
“Yes.”
“That’s racist, Barbie.”
Barbie took a breath for a moment and said: “Well, from times l’ve spoke to her, she’s said that since I know that I like to sometimes imitate another person’s voice when I tell a story since it kind of makes the person feel like they were there when it happened-“
“Kind of like you’re taking them with you to a flashback?”
“Yeah and she’s told me that it’s fine that l do her voice especially since every story I ever have told about her has been a positive one, as well as the fact that her accent is barely even there to begin with but more importantly, she said she’d let me on one condition.”
“And what was that?”
“That I would let her imitate me whenever she told a story with me in it ?”
Brooklyn smiled and said: “ok, so Teresa heard you crying and..”
“I was so scared, I was so.. so many things and then I heard her say: ‘Barbie? Is that you?’ I caved, and bursted into even bigger tears crying out: ‘YES! IT’S ME, TERESA! THIS WHOLE NIGHT HAS BEEN RUINED FOR ME AND I DON’T KNOW WHAT TO DO!’ She then said: ‘I don’t want to intrude but l’d like you to come out so l could at least give you a hug since I feel bad and feel like it was my fault.’ And then I said: ‘No! No! No! Don’t blame yourself! We both know it was an accident!’
There was a good pause for a moment.
‘Well Barbie-‘
‘HOW COULD YOU!? HOW COULD YOU!? HOW FUCKING COULD YOU, TERESA!? THIS WAS-‘
‘EVERY NIGHT IS BARBIE’S NIGHT! WHY CAN’T YOU JUST SEE IT THAT WAY AND THINK: ‘WELL, SOMETIMES THINGS DON’T ALWAYS GO MY WAY! BUT I GUESS I’LL HAVE FUN ANYWAY!’
‘YOU DIDN’T THINK I THOUGHT OF THAT ALREADY!?’, I screamed.
‘YOU DIDN’T THINK I WAS ALREADY TRYING TO SEE IT THAT WAY!? IT ISN’T LIKE YOU RUINED A BIRTHDAY PARTY, I WOULD’VE UNDERSTOOD THAT KIND OF THINKING IF IT WERE IT BUT IT WAS PROM, TERESA! PROM! YOU RUINED PROM FOR ME! | WILL NEVER FORGIVE YOU FOR THIS!
WE’RE THROUGH!’
And then I burst out of the stall, spat on the floor and stormed out without even glancing to see how I looked in the mirror.”
“You were really going through it, weren’t you?”
“I was. And I was conflicted too, for reasons you can easily figure out.”
“And have already been mentioned.”
“Yeah.”
“Then what happened?”
“I then wiped my tears, looked at myself on my phone in selfie mode and rejoined the party but since I didn’t feel like dancing, 1 just sat at my table for a good while. It was only ’til a staff member of the venue came to me asking if l’d like a dress to change into since.. you know.”
“Yeah.”
“And they weren’t able to just provide me with a dress, THEY WENT THE WHOLE NINE YARDS FOR ME!”
“WUUUUT!?”
“YEAH! They had someone freaking blow-dry and style my hair, do my make-up that looked professional and a nice pair of flats for me to wear ALL *WITH* THE LUSCIOUS LAVENDER DRESS THEY HAD ME PICK OUT! OUT OF ALL THE OTHER LOVELY CHOICES THAT I HAD!
:,D
And there I was on the verge of then crying tears of fucking joy, doing a twirl in the mirror saying: ‘Thank you! Thank you! Thank you all so much! You really didn’t have to do this! How can I ever repay you?’
And they said: ‘No need to repay us, just remember to thank the young lady who came to us about it.’
And I asked: ‘Who?”
“It was Teresa wasn’t it?”
“Don’t get ahead of me!”
“Sorry..”
“..and when I asked: ‘who?’. the response was in fact: ‘she said her name was Teresa.”
Brooklyn just smiled ^_^
“I closed my eyes, to let some tears out in a way without letting them leave my eyes or run down my cheeks as to not ruin my make-up but some did escape my eyes only to do little damage to what they did, and they then put my other clothes in a bag to take with me, making it clear that I could keep the dress and to have fun and you can figure out the rest.”
“Yeah, I can but how does this tie in to what’s happening now?”
“Teresa called me one day last week saying that she wanted to talk and confessed to me that the reason why she ‘accidentally’ made me fall into the pool wasn’t just because she wanted to humble me and was jealous but because she was also jealous of me and Ken. And my initial response was: don’t worry Teresa, you’re a gorgeous individual with an incredible personality to match, sometimes more-so than me, I think! You’ll find someone!’ And then she said: ‘what if my jealousy was also because I wished that it was me that went to prom with you and not Ken?’
..and here we are now”
“..so you’re telling me, that Teresa Rivera, your best friend since you first moved here waited SIX years to tell you that!?”
“Yeah.. and there were times were there seemed to be some.. tension.. but it was never really addressed..”
“Because you were with Ken.”
“AND because it never really occurred to us that either was even attracted to the same sex.. not that it ever seemed like a bad thing just.. way out of character for either of us..”
“But it never even occurred to either of you, EVEN WHEN YOU WROTE THAT BEAUTIFUL SONG TOGETHER?”
“Actually, it was then when it started to seep in that maybe there was something there that wasn’t there before.. or always was but never addressed.. ‘two voices, one song..”, Malibu sang at the end.
“You never felt this with Ken?”
“Well, I tried having us sing that song as well since he can sing too!”
“But it wasn’t the same, was it?”
“No.. that was actually where the real trouble started. As well as when Teresa and I decided to hang out and go shopping like we always did and-“
“You girls started making out, didn’t you?”
“BARBIE! PLEASE! No matter how on point you are, please! Please! Please please please please don’t get ahead of me. Please just let me tell the story. I feel very disrespected when you do this.”
“And I feel like you respect me enough to tell it to me like that and not thinking just because I’m black, I shouldn’t be criticized when I’m being a jerk like anyone such as someone who looks more like you such as Teresa.”
…
“So was that a test? Every time you did that?”
“Mhm. It took you a while but at least I knew you were trying to be a good friend, if not a good person, like you always do. I’ve just never seen you stand up for yourself to an extent necessary and I really wanted to stimulate that within you.”
“..even if it meant the possibility of me being racially offensive?”
“Well I knew THAT was unlikely but as always with anyone, I was prepared.”
Malibu put her hand on Brooklyn’s shoulder with a solemn look of care on her face, genuine care for her friend with the same name as her and Barbie reciprocated and even put her hand on the blonde one’s face.
And then they nodded at each other in respect and then Brooklyn gestured at Malibu to continue.
“So.. as you may remember, Teresa and I wrote and sang that song last year, with an adventure of us involving a diamond castle to go with it, and then three days after I tried that song with Ken, we hung out, went shopping and when we went back to my place to try on our new outfits.. I just kind of found myself.. again.. acting out of character, feeling kind of out of my skin and Teresa was the person l’d often go to for that IF NOT Ken but we both know who l was leaning towards in that moment.”
Brooklyn nodded.
“So I was just asking Teresa what she thought of certain parts of my body-“
Malibu stopped herself to give Brooklyn a look this time.
And Brooklyn threw her hands up in surrender and said: “last time, I promise.”
Malibu nodded.
“But yeah.. so I asked Teresa what she thought about certain parts of my body like if she thought my boobs were too big, my butt being the right size and her then going off saying: ‘Barbie this isn’t like you to go grenade-fishing for compliments. You are beautiful from head to toe, your smile is like the sun and you light up every room that you enter. I know that I’m gorgeous but so are you! What’s making you feel this way?’ she asked. And then I just said that “sometimes I feel dowdy by comparison because of how stunning you are.” and then went into this long winded speech about how my heart jumps at the very sight of her, no longer trying not to sound too romantic and then Teresa laughed a bit and said: ‘it sounds like you’re in love with me and that I was even your sexual awakening!” Barbie/Malibu then had a nervous, hormonally flushed look on her face as she got ready to say what she was going to say next.
“..please tell me that wasn’t the look you had on your face when she said that,” Brooklyn said.
The look Malibu had on her face remained the same and had in fact intensified.
“No..” said Brooklyn.
Malibu nodded and said: “Yes.”
Barbie/Brooklyn put a comforting hand on Barbie/Malibu’s shoulder and said: “if you want to stop here, it’s fine, I understand if this is getting uncomfortable.”
But the blonde Barbie lost it and let out whatever was left on her mind:
“agh.. it’s.. it’s.. just.. IT ALL HAPPENED SO FAST!? OK? The moment, the very fucking moment she saw that look on my face! I was losing it more so than I did at Prom and you knowing me, this doesn’t fucking happen often! We had been imagining and writing stories together having every wonderful fantasy after another from us being being fairies, us being princesses, BOTH, as well as mermaids on multiple occasions and then every single image, every single memory and photo I ever had of her in my head of us.. the very image of her by my side was fading until she walked up to me with her comforting hand on my face like yours was before and said: ‘it’s ok, you were mine too, cariña!’
…and then we kissed.”
With Brooklyn left at a loss for words hearing that?
Malibu continued.
“At first it was just a light kiss, then we just seemed to enjoy it so much that it led to full-on tongue-in-cheek, and it was like years and years of pent up desire and attraction that neither of us knew about was finally coming out like a dam that broke after someone threw a big pink sledgehammer at it, IF NOT A BIG FUCKING PINK WRECKING BALL!”
Brooklyn’s demeanor remained the same as she still listened.
“It was all a blur as we had our hands all over each other as we made out and then I just remember us waking up in my bed with no clothes on both feeling sore like we had long day at the gym, the day before..
It was HARD for us talk about it for a while, let alone with Ken later but when we all eventually did, we ended up being where we are now.”
“which I imagine Ken didn’t take very well.”
“No, no he didn’t. He was already a wreck when I told him that I just wasn’t happy that night. He didn’t scream at me or anything, he just quietly went back into his car and drove off, then when we agreed to meet up at my house again, he broke down almost crying when he passionately expressed his own thoughts on the matter and the identity crisis he was having.”
“It has been ‘Barbie and Ken’ for quite sometime now. He probably hasn’t seen himself any other way throughout his life. Like from how you described your childhood growing up and playing with him almost every day, for every waking moment of it, it’s almost like he always felt it was his duty to always be there for you and when you were gone from each other’s lives for a while, he must’ve been desperate to make up for lost time even if he didn’t always seem to understand you to the extent that Teresa did all your life, even he, if not all of you-”
“All of us.”
“..did the best we could at the end of the day :)”
They once again comforted each other for a good moment and hugged for a while longer and then wished the other a good night before Brooklyn left Barbie’s dream house.
Barbie then looked at her phone to see what time it was and said: “ok, l’ve got time.”
She then brushed and blow-dried her waist-length canary-yellow and golden-blonde mixed hair even fluffing it out to accentuate her thick natural waves, as well as volumizing it, dusted her face with some blush, lilac eyeshadow and hot pink liquid lipstick like she had with her Rapunzel look in ’97 to those living outside her world when from her perspective, she rocked it a year after high school for a high budget theater performance different from the movie she was in a year later followed by using an eyelash curler and added mascara, slipped on her pink tight mini dress and matching flats with Teresa saying that she was going to wear a similar dress with a neon green color with matching flats, brick-red lipstick and yellow eye-shadow, giving herself a blow out to her hair at home.
She didn’t take much time looking at herself, she just hoped she was going to be able to measure up.
Based on Teresa’s description, it was something similar, something more or less as extravagant but she knew either way, it was all going to be ok.. even if she was still kind of nervous.
As she walked, anxiously getting a text saying: “meet me inside the house, I’m as hungry as you are but I’m still getting ready ;)”
“Ok!”, she texted back.
And when she got there, the front door was already open.
It was only open to a crack so as not to make it obvious that someone could just walk in there unannounced, but Teresa hadn’t exactly done anything like this before, at least not since all the times Barbie would come over to her house to play or even sleepover with her mother being the sweetest to her before her passing a year before senior year.
Feeling a mixture of fear and anticipation, like that time they took turns playing ‘Luigi’s Mansion’ a while back, Barbie also couldn’t help but hear the opening sound effects to the album version of Michael Jackson’s Thriller in her head. And it wasn’t like she was afraid that someone was about to jump out and attack her, especially with all the lights being on but.. she was nervous and filled to the brim with anticipation. Plus, both she and Teresa have jump-scared the other on multiple occasions, especially around the halloween time, but this felt pretty different, what was about to happen.
“Come upstairs, Barbie. I’ve been waiting for you..” Teresa said from up above in a low seductive tone of voice like a female version of that guy you hear at the beginning of the Haunted Mansion/Phantom Manor ride.
And she was both impressed, a little frightened and amused when she went upstairs, made her way to the hallway and saw Teresa’s hand casting a shadow across the hallway wall as she gestured her to come into the room, her bedroom with a small bathroom in it, enough to fit two people in it, with just a toilet, sink and a shower, it wasn’t the only one in the entire house.
The hallway wall as she gestured her to come into the room, her bedroom with a small bathroom in it, enough to fit two people in it, with just a toilet, sink and a shower, it wasn’t the only one in the entire house.
Yet it being there was convenient, especially as Barbie walked in, Teresa no where to be seen.. until she emerged from out the bathroom, hot shower steam pouring out (that she probably turned on for a minute for added effect) in just her white fleece bathrobe and a voluminous soft cloud of thick brown hair brushing against the tip of her big butt without a hint of make-up on yet looking sexier and more beautiful than she ever did.
“T-Teresa?”
“Did I say hungry?”
Barbie nodded her head as if to say yes.
“I meant *thirsty*”
The moment Teresa let her robe drop to the floor, Barbie let her animal instincts take over and didn’t hesitant to almost violently start making out with her and fucking each other’s brains out until they were both in bed with nothing on, slowly gasping and panting catching their breath, both having taken each other’s breaths away and from then on, only letting anything of an organic nature happen.
And then still feeling hungry and full of energy, threw their outfits on and ran out, called an uber and headed out to the upscale Italian restaurant they talked about going to, as well a nearby taco place with a more casual vibe but hey, both the music and the overall energy of it was more to their liking.
Then they hit the nearby club and then some dude went and yelled out: “Maria! Is that you? What are you doing with Ken’s lady!?”
Barbie then just looked at him and beamed:
“Her name’s Teresa and she’s MY lady!”, right before passionately making out with her in front of him, pink manicured fingers entwined in Teresa’s soft curls.
And then she stopped for a moment to say:
“Never and I mean EVER, do ANYTHING to minimize your natural beauty. You hear me, Teresa!?”, Barbie said with love and sexual aggression in her voice looking straight into her dark-haired counterpart’s eyes.
“I won’t, just don’t hide your own, like you being a Polish-Mexican multi-heritage mix as well as a Boricua like me, even if you can :)”, Teresa responded.
“Deal”, Barbie said firmly before continuing to lock lips and hips snogging the shit out of her.
The next morning, Teresa woke up feeling sore as if from a day-long workout as before in Barbie’s bedroom, seeing a turquoise satin robe on the chair next to her with her club outfit underneath it.
She smiled and slipped it on and headed out following the smell of pancakes feeling like she was floating along the way like in one of those cartoons.
Barbie was there in a big white varsity t-shirt from college (out of fear of any of the batter getting on her pink satin robe which Teresa knew and understood) flipping pancakes with a waffle iron visibly present on one of the kitchen counters.
“Something smells good this morning”, Teresa said as she came up to Barbie give her a deep kiss then another one sweetly on her forehead.
“..as do the pancakes :3”
Barbie: “:3”
“I won’t get too flirty on you”, Teresa said.
“I’m still waking up wondering whether last night was a dream and wouldn’t want you to burn yourself or anything.”
“As hot as you are”, Barbie said.
Teresa made a flirty playfully frustrated face going: “ooh.. you are so lucky l’m hungry and tired than anything right now cuz you are being so so bad..”
Barbie flipped over one more pancake with one hand, licked her finger with the other, and the moment the pancake flipped, Barbie touched her butt with said finger right as the griddle sizzled.
And then Barbie added the finished pancake to the pile of other pancakes for them to choose from like at a buffet and they ate.
Even used the batter to also make a couple of waffles and put some oreo cookie pieces in the batter as they poured it into the iron.
After that, they chilled and relaxed on the couch watching a favorite movie of theirs until they both fell asleep.
“We should probably move in together at least if this is going to be an everyday thing.”, Teresa said before they passed out.
With the last thing Barbie said was: “let’s continue this conversation after we sleep.. or in our dreams if possible..”
Then they shared a long deep kiss before falling asleep.
Then 2 hours later they wake up making out some more.
“Barbie, Barbara, Barbie Millicent Roberts.. if this is going to last as long as I think it will. please let me be your marisol, let me be your ocean and your sun.”
Barbie took a breath as they held each other on the couch.
“Then please, Teresa Gabriela Rivera, mi dulcè cariña.. let me be your.. moon and.. the very ground you walk on?..”
Teresa giggled thinking that was cute.
“You mean my.. Luntierra?”
Barbie nodded giggling too.
“Ok, su eres mi Luntierra, yo soy su Marisol.. and Barbie.. while you did pronounce those words correctly, you should know that en español, the adjective usually goes after the noun.”
Barbie’s cheeks got flustered in embarrassment.
“It’s fine, you’re not familiar with the language like I am”, Teresa said with a warm assuring smile.
Barbie nodded, smiled and giggled.
Then she said: “..su eres mi cariña dulce..?”
“Si *3*”
And they kissed deeply once again.
